The Automotive Service Association (ASA) emphasizes the need for federal backing of apprentice programs in the automotive industry. In a recent hearing conducted by the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor & Pensions, ASA expressed support for the Youth Apprenticeship Advancement Act (S. 2363). Julie Massaro, ASA’s Executive Director, highlighted the significance of technician training and education, underscoring the bill’s potential to strengthen the talent pipeline essential for independent automotive repairers. Despite the promising income opportunities in technician careers, ASA notes the need for increased federal encouragement of apprentice programs to address the growing demand for automotive technicians, particularly in light of rapid advancements in electric vehicle (EV) technology. The proposed legislation, funded through H-1B Nonimmigrant Petitioner Fees, aims to provide grants for workforce training programs, enabling apprentices to gain valuable experience while earning credentials.
